Château Ausone
Alain Vauthier
Bordeaux, France
History and Terroir
Not far from Cheval Blanc is the highly esteemed Château Ausone, sitting on one of Bordeaux's greatest terroirs. Although the estate’s roots date back to the 11th century, the winery’s modern day history begins in the 1700s. Today, Ausone’s prestige is credited to its optimal exposure and clay-rich limestone soils, which are rather unique to this part of Saint-Émilion.
Farming and Winemaking
In total, Ausone’s vineyards comprise seven hectares, which are planted to Cabernet Franc (predominantly) and Merlot. Grand Vin is aged in new barrels for 20 months and results in deep, layered and persistent wine with remarkable intensity. Along with the château’s second wine, only 2,000 cases are produced annually.
