History and Terroir

Argiano is based in the heart of Montalcino, and this historic property is best known for their traditional Sangiovese-based reds, as well as their modern, IGT Toscana-designated blends. Argiano’s roots date back to the 16th century, with wine and olive oil at the helm of its production from its early days. Over the few centuries to follow, the property was passed between numerous noble families, including an heir to the Cinzano fortune. This unique array of proprietorship created a diverse and dynamic foundation for the property, which is still evident in its current ownership today. By the mid-20th century, Argiano had become one of the pioneering estates of the Montalcino appellation, helping to establish the regional Consortium and promote the area’s wines around the world.

Farming and Winemaking

Today, the Argiano name is still as important to Montalcino’s story as ever. Around ten years ago, the estate was sold to the Esteves family, who has continued to advance the wineries holdings and cellar practices. A total of 10 hectares of vines were added to the property, bringing its total holdings from 50 to 60 hectares. While Argiano’s flagship wines remain their Brunello di Montalcino cuvées (standard, Riserva, and single-vineyard Vigna del Suolo), their Super Tuscan-inspired blends crafted from Bordeaux varieties also make up a significant portion of production – another category of Italian wine of which the estate helped to put on the world’s radar. In 2018, Argiano received its official organic certification. Argiano’s wines are beloved by new wine lovers and long-standing collectors alike, thanks to their youthful approachability and simultaneous ability to age in the cellar. Their Sangiovese-based reds are silky and aromatic, while their Bordeaux-influenced Super Tuscans are bold, supple, and incredibly rich in flavor. This historic Montalcino estate continues to break boundaries within the viticulture and vinification realms year in and year out, as well as receive award-winning praise for their coveted bottles.
