History and Terroir

Situated in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Thomas-Collardot is owned and operated by mother-son duo Jaqueline Thomas and her son, Matthieu. The pair farm 2.5 hectares of vines across numerous appellations in Burgundy, and many of the vines have been in the family for three generations. However, Jacqueline’s father leased the vines out for a number of years, though Jacqueline was able to gain them back in 2010. She was ultimately joined by Matthieu after he completed his studies in Beaune in 2018. In the vineyards, Jacqueline and Matthieu take a ‘parcellaire’ approach, meaning that each plot is farmed specifically to fit its unique needs. However, the thread that ties all farming together is the duo’s organic approach, as well as their emphasis on biodiversity. Jacqueline and Matthieu note that the small size of their holdings allows them to be in constant contact with each individual vine, allowing them to fully understand each plant’s singular growth cycle. The majority of vineyard work at Domaine Thomas-Collardot is done by hand. Pruning is done as late as possible, and biodynamic treatments are applied.

Farming and Winemaking

Come harvest, all fruit is picked by hand and gently pressed upon arriving at the cellar. The juice is then transferred to steel where a small amount of sulfur is added. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts in 350L barrels, then elevage is carried out for 10-12 months in barrel followed by an additional three to six months in stainless steel. Today, Jacqueline and Matthieu proudly produce wines from a handful of village-level lieux-dits, as well as a few premier crus in Puligny-Montrachet. Bright, classically styled, and full of life, these small-batch cuvées are the epitome of artisanal winemaking—and while still under the radar for the time being, the immense potential of these wines is likely to render them much harder to come by in the near future.
