Château Rauzan-Ségla

“The small things can make a big difference. The details at the end are what’s important and my job is about getting all those details right.”

Mr Nicolas Audebert

History

For almost 400 years, Chateau Rauzan-Ségla, a Second Great Classified Growth of 1855, reigns over the lands of the prestigious Margaux appellation located on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region.

Since its acquisition by the famed fashion house Chanel in 1994, owned by the Wertheimer family, Chateau Rauzan Segla has experienced a monumental renovation, combining the best features of its 350-year-old legacy with the advances of modern winemaking. Its Managing Director Nicolas Audebert, former winemaker at Cheval des Andes (LVMH property in Mendoza, Argentina) and also in charge of Chanel’s other property, Château Canon on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, has contributed to the change.

Wines & Terroir

Chateau Rauzan-Segla has a horizontal terroir composed by alternate layers of well-drained gravel and clay soils, like a “millefeuille”. The river plays a role in influencing the weather and is also the origin of the renowned Garonne gravel that is deposited along the banks. This gravel captures heat from the sun during the day and then uses it to keep the soils warm at night, which helps the vine ripen its berries. In addition to the deep gravel, the Rauzan-Ségla vineyard has fine gravel ridges and clay-limestone soil. These poor soils are perfect for growing the typical Médoc grape varieties. The entire vineyard is farmed using organic methods.

Thanks to its Plot-by-Plot approach, like a game, its 66 hectares, 51 under vines, 100 different parcels and 21 various soils have an impact on harvest and blending.

A true symbol of Margaux, that highlights elegance and complexity as opposed to power and richness.
